Two years in New York and feeling very thankful

Fallen tree near the Natural History Museum

Greg and I moved to New York two years ago tonight. This also happens to be my 101st post. A lot has happened in our time here. There have been a lot of ups and downs. A lot has changed. Mostly today I just feel very thankful.

Sandy left us pretty much alone in the Upper West Side. We made all the preparations. Filled the tub, bought water, stocked up on batteries, flashlights, and canned goods. I spent a day cooking to make sure all the food in our fridge would last as long as possible in the event of an outage. The lights flickered a few times and now I’ve got meals stocked for a week. Outside, in our neighborhood, things are already open and starting to get back to business as usual. We got very, very lucky.

We mostly got fallen trees. Although we did have some structural damage.

This was nearby at 72nd St and
at 57th, by Columbus Circle, a crane collapsed from the top of skyscraper.

Downtown and in Brooklyn many places flooded.
We got very lucky up here.

I should say, we got lucky yet again, because Irene left us pretty much alone last year, so far we seem to be getting through this economy ok, and there are a million other things for which I am grateful.

I know there are many, many people not very far away that have not been quite so lucky. Tonight, we will be celebrating our first two years in New York quietly at home. I will be counting my blessings, and I will do the best I can to pay it forward.
